THE LOOP
Residents Love:
“Iconic” is a term reserved for districts like the Loop. Considered the heart of Chicago and the city’s official downtown area, the Loop is abuzz with iconic Chicago attractions, historic architecture, river cruises, Millennium Park, the Chicago Riverwalk, a vibrant theatre district, plus major dining and shopping along State Street. The Loop is also home to one of the most important financial districts in the country.
Living in The Loop
Home Types
Since The Loop is primarily a business district, new construction condos, lofts, and high-rises lining Millennium Park make up the majority of housing choices. Also part of the Loop, the New East Side is a special residential section amid the downtown energy with green space and high-rise living.
Affordability Factor
Despite its popularity and central downtown location, housing in The Loop remains competitive with other neighborhoods in the city.
A Night Out
On weekends and weeknights, sections of the Loop can quiet down after the business crowd leaves. For a night out, try a classy steak dinner at Prime & Provisions, the mussels at Fisk & Co. in the Hotel Monaco, or the wiener schnitzel at The Berghoff. After dinner, you’ll want to head for a show in Theatre District, which is always buzzing with Tony Award-winning shows and world premieres, at the Auditorium Theatre, the Cadillac Palace Theatre, and the Nederlander Theatre.
The Perfect Sunday
For the most iconic Chicago experience, spend your Sunday seeing the city from the river. Walk along the award-winning Chicago Riverwalk, a pedestrian-only pathway lined with great waterfront restaurants, the McCormick Bridgehouse, and the Chicago River Museum. Take in the mind-blowing digital art display Art on theMART. Or, you might also want to view the city from an architecture river cruise, like the Chicago Architecture Foundation Center River Cruise aboard Chicago’s First Lady Cruises. Another option is to head to the Jay Pritzker Pavilion at Millennium Park, where you’ll find legendary music festivals like the Chicago Blues Festival, Chicago Jazz Festival, and a free summer music series and film series. Right next door, you can grab the kids and rock climb, skate, and play at whimsical Maggie Daley Park.
Your Commute
You’ll find a steady stream of buses, trains, cabs, and rideshares shuttling people in and out of the Loop. There are 11 Metra lines that all make their final stops in Chicago's Loop and five Metra stations. All eight CTA train lines offer service in the Loop. By train, you’re 34 minutes to McCormick Place, 29 minutes to Merchandise Mart, and 10 minutes to Union Station. And as one of Chicago’s most bike-friendly areas, the Loop offers one of Chicago's first barrier-protected bike lanes on Dearborn Avenue. The Lakefront Trail also offers a gorgeous backdrop for a ride into the Loop. The Loop is easily accessible by car, thanks to a network of major interstates and highways feeding directly to the Loop.
Landmarks
You will be right in the heart of all of the city’s most celebrated cultural landmarks in the Loop. The Cultural Mile is a stretch of Michigan Avenue that begins at the Chicago River and ends at Roosevelt Boulevard. This stretch includes the Orchestra Hall, The Art Institute of Chicago, Millennium Park, Grant Park, Auditorium Theater, the Fine Arts Building, the Theater District, the grand Marshall Field and Company Building, and more. At the Millennium Park Campus, you’ll find the famous Cloud Gate (a.k.a. “Bean”), Crown Fountain, the tranquil Lurie Garden, and the Pritzker Pavilion. The Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) can also be found in The Loop.
